Writing your own spell can seem intimidating and complicated but following these steps will help you to create spells that can be just as effective as ones you learn from books or other witches.

  1. Boil down the purpose of the spell to a word or short phrase.
  2. Find the ingredients suited to that goal like crystals, herbs, candles and incense (fin suitable ones with correspondence lists and resource books)
  3. Consider the best possible timing for the spell (moon phase ect)
  4. Decide if you want a verbal component (incantation). If so, write it in a manner that includes your components and goal.
  5. Bless all the items you will be working with (ridding them of any unwanted energies)
  6. Consider any actions that might help support the magick and where best to place them in the spell process (eg, lighting a candle at the outset to illustrate your intention)
  7. Focus your will and begin the spell, building energy.
  8. Guide the energy as far as you can mentally, the release it and trust the in the outcome
  9. Keep a journal of you successes and failures for future references and improvements

bvidma:

To all those who need recovery after a psychic/karmic attack, feel as though you are powerless and you need that little extra magical push, or merely for those who have had a not-so-good day,

this is for you.

Take back what belongs to you, little witch.

Your voice can mend.

“Calling upon the powers from

North, South, East, and West,

The four corners of the Earth, I take my power back.

Forsake all who threaten to do harm upon me,

I signal the universe to protect me,

and sever me from their toxicity.

Grant me the power to rise above where they had thought I had been sent to fall.

I thank the powers of North, South, East, and West,

The gifts of the Earth and the stars above;

powers of earth, water, fire, and air

with good to all,

reverse harm that has been done,

by the grace of my own magic,

this spell is done.”

*The following is optional as I am aware that not all witches have access to certain materials. However, making use of the following can accelerate and/or strengthen the intended outcome if you do possess them. You can always replace or add materials as you please; make my spell your spell.

Accessories:

-Sage/Perovskia/Palo Santo

-Hawthorn

-Onyx, amethyst, smoky quartz (regular quartz may suffice as well)

Candle Color(s):

-Black; for banishing and breaking curses

-White; purification from negative energies

Tarot Cards:

-Nine of Wands

-Chariot

-The Moon

Which Direction to Face when Casting a Spell

Another gift of nature and an important factor to consider when initiating a spell is the direction in which to face. Compass directions north, south, east, and west are very significant when casting a spell. By facing the proper direction, you are utilizing the vibration or energy that it offers. The powers of the four directions are a free gift of nature that is often overlooked.

North

North corresponds to the element of earth. Face north for health issues, healing of the body, spirituality, increasing or developing your intuition, using some type of divination, for transcending the physical and trying to communicate with someone telepathically, and in asking for guidance from whomever or whatever you call your higher power. This is the most powerful direction

South

South corresponds to the element of fire. Face south for love issues, relationships of any kind, creative and artistic pursuits, anything of a romantic or emotional nature.

East

East corresponds to the element of air. Face east for career issues, strength, clarity, new business opportunities, financial matters and any endeavor requiring extra energy, healing of the mind, new beginnings.

West

West corresponds to the element of water.  Face west for letting go and moving on, increasing self-esteem, forgiving yourself or someone else, cleansing, unconditional love.

Uses in magic:

  • When doing a spell to help separate yourself from someone or to banish them, using a thorn to represent them can be a powerful metaphor.
  • If you do blood magic, use the thorn (AFTER THOROUGHLY CLEANING IT) to lightly prick your side. Another powerful metaphor.
  • If you are doing a hex jar that requires shaking, these are good additives to it.

Symbolism:

  • Can represent a person who is causing you pain and suffering
  • Can represent a hardship.
  • Can represent physical/emotional pain

I harvested some off a dead tree once, and I’ve never known what to do with them, so this is helpful!

How to find your working energy’s color

Whether you need to cast a circle, mingle your energy with your wand, or charge an object, it can sometimes be hard to visualize it. The easiest way to work with your energy is to see it! So here’s a very simple exercise to find your energy and to work with it! I promise when you see the color of your energy, spells become a LOT easier!

Get comfy, close your eyes, and take a slow, deep breath in. Hold it for 3 counts and then slowly exhale. Do this 3 times (or as many as you need to relax) before letting your breathing fall into its natural rhythm.

Imagine you’re in darkness. It’s comfortable, warm, safe. As you float there you see a line*. Go to it. This is your thread of energy, follow the thread, touch it, if you want. You will be lead to where it came from, your main energy pool**. This is YOUR personal energy. Get to know it, bask in it a little. When you’re read, slowly open your eyes. You are now ready to cast magic!

Anytime you feel you can’t cast, or it’s hard, just use this exercise to find your energy again, we all lose sight/feel sometimes!

*The line will be different for everyone. Some see it as yarn, some as a neon light, some as mist, etc. The color is also different for everyone, as is the thickness and brightness. Occasionally your color will change! Not all the time, maybe never, but sometimes it can! Mine was purple for the longest time, and now it’s blue!

**The shape of the energy pool is different for everyone. Mine is a massive pillar. A friend of mine’s is a sphere, and still another’s is a puddle on the ‘ground’. So don’t worry if yours ‘looks right’.

Blessed Be!

“For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!’

I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered.
I liked white better,’ I said.

White!’ he sneered. ‘It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken.’

In which case it is no longer white,’ said I. 'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.”

Starting out in witchcraft

I’ve been asked a lot of questions by people who are interested in witchcraft but don’t know where to start, and I gotta say, it is super difficult to figure where the best place to start is, and so I figured I would make a post specifically for those baby witches who aren’t sure where to start

Research

The most important part of being a baby witch is research, but theses such a huge amount of information out there that it can be difficult to know where to start. The easiest way to do it, and the way I did it, is by just starting with what drew you to witchcraft. I was drawn to runes initially so started researching runestones and divination, which is how I got into tarot and everything else came in turn. Even if what drew you to the craft is something as superficial as fashion, you can still research where those fashions came from. Question everything. You see lavender is used in a spell? Research why. You see that a certain colour of candle works better in a spell? Research why. You see a sigil? Find out the origin. Someone gives you a tip on the internet? Do background research into what they said. Never just blindly follow what someone says especially if you’re going to use it in your craft. Make sure you know exactly what everything is, means, and where it came from before using it in any capacity. The better informed you are, the more likely good things will come from your craft.

Book of Shadows and Grimiors

Keeping a book of shadows or a grimior (or both) is a great way to record your research. Its important not to get caught up in the way your book shadows looks. Of course if you want to make a beautiful book of shadows then that’s fantastic, but if a page takes you so long to write that it’s hindering your research, then I would consider keeping both a book of shadows and a grimior. A grimior is purely for information, facts, spells, etc… a grimior is worth taking time over. A book of shadows functions more as a journal. For writing personal experience, notes, etc… I keep a very messy book of shadows in a plain notebook that I just write whatever in. It has no kind of order to it all, and I suspect no one can read it but me. I also keep a grimior in a beautiful leather bound notebook that I bought in italy and I write in it in neat and specifically stylised writing that is easy to read. Infact, I also have a separate tarot journal. Having both, I find, puts less pressure on academics.

Start simple

Don’t expect too much too soon. I wouldn’t recommend diving right into complex spellwork. If you’ve just started, there are probably things you don’t know about casting spells that are important to keep you safe, and you haven’t had the time find your energy and how to focus it to the best of your abilities. Give yourself time to figure out what you want in your practice rather than diving into one specific path. And absolutely don’t work with the fae straight off the bat. Bad idea. Bad. Don’t do it. Do your research. I also would recommend getting a feel for the practice and for what you want from it before committing yourself to a deity/deities. Again, give yourself time to figure out what path to take. It’s totally ok to change your path along the way. If you initially decide to be a green witch but change your mind and opt for cottage witchcraft, that is totally ok. Changing you path even when you were absolutely certain, is absolutely fine, even if you’ve been on your initial path for years (even decades). I haven’t decided a specific path at all yet, so I’m currently an eclectic witch, but that may, and is likely, to change

It’s important to remember that every witch’s path is different. Gatekeeping is a big problem in the community but don’t allow people to tell you that you have to be born into a family of witches to be a witch. It’s a practice, not an inherited gift or race.

Tbh this post isnt complete and I’ll continue to add to it very time as I think of things

Tarot and how I use it

Figured it was finally time for a tarot master post

What is tarot?

Tarot cards are a divination tool, often used by pagans, wiccans, and other people who practice witchcraft. Tarot cards are (usually) used by asking a question/thinking about a situation, and laying out cards in a layout appropriate to the situation (you can use ones other people have made, but you can make your own spreads too), and every position in the layout represents a different aspect of the question or situation. For example:

This is a spread in which the first card represents the past, the second card represents the present, and the third card represents the future. There are many different layouts. I’ll post some in the future!

The Arcana: Major and Minor

Tarot cards are split into Major and Minor Arcana. The Major arcana are numbered 0 - 21, and the cards all have a meaning that correlates directly to the name of the card. For example, the Death card means the end of a cycle and change. The Minor Arcana are split into suits. The most common suits in the Minor Arcana are Cups, Pentacles, Swords, and Wands. Within the suits, the cards are numbered from Ace - 10 and there are four court cards per suit, generally labelled Page, Knight, Queen, and King, although in the Wild Unknown tarot deck, the court cards are Daughter, Son, Mother, and Father. The Cups represent feelings, emotion, intuition, and creativity. Pentacles represent finances, work, and material possessions. Swords represent thoughts words, and actions. Wands represent energy, motivation, and passion.

Cleansing tarot decks

Theres loads of different ways to cleanse a tarot deck. There’s plenty of cleansing rituals, but I would recommend doing your own research on that, because I don’t tend to do full rituals to cleanse my deck, so I don’t know much about them. My favourite ways to cleanse a deck are by using white sage or white sage incense, or deck knocking. To cleanse with sage, just run the cards through the smoke. To knock on the deck, all you have to do it put the deck down on a surface (table, floor, etc…) and knock on it like the deck is a door. Knocking just knocks out bad vibes and spirits and all of that, it’s the easiest and quickest way to cleanse a deck. If you’re only going to use knocking as your cleansing method, I’d recommend doing it before every reading.

I’ll add more to this post when I have time but I just wanted to get this posted today because I’ve had in my drafts for months

Decks I have:

  • The Wild Unknown tarot by Kim Krans
  • The Rider-Waite tarot
  • The Bastards Tarot by Emerson Barrett and Emery Elizabeth

For those seeking inspiration, creativity, and bursts of genius, the element of Lightning seeks to excite the world around it.

(OK, I know the voice and filter are a bit much, but I’m new at this and I got excited!)

xolartlastrologyplanners:

The first advice of absolute importance is to avoid starting anything during the Moon’s Void of Course. Things like interviews, important business meetings, initiating projects, and especially Spells likely won’t turn out well or will remain unfinished.

When planning a date for your Spell, it’s important to take into consideration the following things:

  • Moon Phase
  • Moon Sign
  • Day of the Week
  • Retrograde Planets

Make sure the above bullets points align with the goals of your Spell.  We have a Moon Phase Planner for 2020 that has all the above information to help pick a date for your Spells!

For example, if we wanted to do a spell for Material Wealth

December 24, 2020 is an excellent day because:

  • the Moon is Waxing and is close to a Full Moon
  • the Moon is in Taurus, the sign of luxury and material possessions
  • it’s a Thursday which is ruled by Jupiter - the planet of wealth and expansion
  • Venus is NOT Retrograde

Now keep in mind that these are guidelines for timing your spells with the best natural energy available. You can do a money spell any time you like (avoid the Void of Course Moon) but it may not have as much supportive energy compared to the above example. This is because of the reasons given in the example. Taurus, the ruler of wealth, is a much better sign for getting money compared to Cancer for example.

The following information will help guide you in planning a date for your Spells.

Moon Phases

Full Moon - the highest point in the moon’s cycle where its energies are at its peak. This is an excellent time for divination.

Note: when a Full Moon occurs twice in a month (October 31 2020) it is considered a Blue Moon. This is similar to a Full Moon but has more power

Waning Moon - the moon here is decreasing to a New Moon so its energies are that of degeneration. Use this time for banishing, cleansing, destruction or bringing anything to an end such as a relationship or bad habits.

New Moon - on the waning side of the New Moon, it has an ending type of energy as the moon is “disappearing”. On the waxing side it has the energy of potential, ready for new beginnings.

Waxing Moon - a time of growth as the light of the moon increases to its peak at the Full Moon. Use this time to do Spells for building something up in your life such as health, new friendships.

Note: it is better to do the Spell closer to the Full/New Moon depending on the goal. Unless you want to do the Spells for multiple days, such as cleansing/banishing, you can start right after the Full Moon and end on the New Moon. This supports the goal of removing bad energy.

Days of the Week

Monday: —————

Monday is the day of the Moon. The moon carries feminine psychic energy and is a great day to start developing psychic abilities, perform divination, cleanse the home, or banishing rituals.

Tuesday: —————
Tuesday is the day of Mars. Mars carries the masculine warrior energy and is a great day for doing Spells where much energy is needed. It is also a good day for black magick where the result is quick and active. Think of the moment when two swords clash.

Wednesday: —————
Wednesday is the day of Mercury. Mercury rules all forms of communication, documents, short-distance travel, and health. This is a great day for doing Spells related to health, improving communication ability, difficult conversations, and safe travels.
