The shrub is having a comeback. Popular during colonial times (it doesn’t require refrigeration), a shrub is simply a fruit-flavored sweetened vinegar mixed with carbonated water. Refreshing and light, this sweet-and-sour drink ideally suited for summer weather. However, we’ve noticed that store-bought shrub is ridiculously expensive so we decided to post our recipe for Blackberry Shrub. Plan ahead: shrub takes 4 days to make but truly improves after a few weeks.

• 1 cup fresh blackberries, washed
• 1½ cups white sugar
• 1 cup white wine vinegar
• Carbonated water

Place the blackberries in a quart canning jar. Combine sugar and vinegar in a pan set over medium-high heat. Bring the solution to a gentle boil, stirring constantly. Once the sugar dissolves pour the liquid into the jar, pressing the berries a bit with a fork to release their juices. Place a lid on the jar and let it rest in a cool dark place.

image

After 4 days strain the mixture (we use a chinois though several layers of cheesecloth will do the job, too), returning the liquid to the jar. The shrub is now ready to drink – mix 2-3 tablespoons of syrup per cup of carbonated water – though the flavor will mellow and improve after a few weeks. We keep ours chilled in the fridge.

aka the most overdue post on my blog. I have been struggling with getting a basic recipe and guide out because it’s such an important, useful, tool that can go overlooked and I want to get it right. I’ve decided to go ahead and publish the copy from the pages i’ve written on it since I’m 2 years late on my cookbook. I promise it’s coming! I have page layouts and everything - i’m sad i had to put it on pause so consider this a sneak peek and a very long post. hope you like it!

Disclaimer ⛔

The idea here is that the original recipe isn’t safe for consumption but those ingredients are what make it so effective. So it can be wise to have two different batches working. The classic which is toxic - for external work, and a modified recipe that can be ingested. Make sure you keep these properly marked and away from each other.

Uses

As a seasoning in food
As a daily supplement
Cleansing Baths

Repelling negativity

History

The history behind Four Thieves is elusive- There’s a possible confusion of names. Richard Forthave, a man said to have allegedly concocted and sold the vinegar as a medicine. The name being transformed over time from Forthave’s to Four Thieves. Then there are the more classic tales of thieves ranging from four to four hundred, employing it as a pesticide and cologne during the plague. Regardless of it’s origins, it was highly effective. It’s prolific history has made it a staple in folklore and practices around the world to protect oneself from illness and malevolence.

One tradition I personally enjoy when crafting your own is adding a new personal ingredient to a batch. Your own contribution as a “thief” to the ever-growing folklore. Customize your vinegar to your own needs! For example, I add turmeric for it’s anti-inflammatory properties as well as it’s energetic and positive correspondences

Recipes

Thieves Vinegar #1 [edible Base recipe]

-Rosemary (protection)
-SageorSage Flowers (cleansing)
-Lavender Flowers (cleansing and calming)
-Garlic (Protection)
-Bruised Cloves (Protection)
-Strong Distilled Vinegar (Cleansing)

Method:
1. Sanitize and cleanse your tools with the method of your choice. Wash and dry your herbs.
2.Take the carving tool and in the head of garlic write your name and the names of the people in your home if you so wish. You can also make this for others, using their name. Think about all negativity and unwanted energy leaving the space as protection fills the area like the aroma of the garlic.
Place the entire head of garlic in your jar.
3.Take your cloves, and give them a smash with the flat side of a knife, or use a mortal and pestle to gently crush them while keeping them whole. You can also take any heavy object to them while they’re in a plastic bag/under parchment paper if these aren’t available to you.
Maintain the same thoughts of protection as the garlic while crushing and adding the cloves.
4.Add the rosemary, sage, and any other desired edible herbs with a clear mind, thinking of a clean protected space, having the utmost confidence in it.
5. Fill jar with vinegar knowing you’re surrounded by clean, positive, and sanitary energy.
6. Let the jar work either in the sun or in any cleansed space for a week to 3 months.
7. Shake occasionally.
8. Strain and store in sanitized glass container of your choice.

✨ Thieves Vinegar #2 [edible & ornamental]

- Rosemary sprig(cleansing, purifying, healing, protection)
- 3 dried Red Chili Peppers(banishment, protection, warding)
- 5 cloves ofGarlic (protection, healing, warding)
- 11Peppercorns (banishment, protection, warding)
- Strong Distilled Vinegar (protection, cleansing, banishment)

Method:
1.
Fill jar or bottle with ingredients in an eye pleasing manner
2.Top with vinegar
3.Display in the kitchen, the place in the home with the most activity or where you feel you need it the most

☠ Thieves Vinegar #3 [non-ingestible]

-Thieves Vinegar #1
Your choice of ingredients like:
- Black Peppercorns, Chili Pepper, Rose, Wormwood*, Meadowsweet, Thyme, Ginger, Turmeric, Angelica*, Horehound*, Marjoram, Rue*

Method:
1.
Follow same method as Thieves Vinegar #1
*IF CHILI IS ADDED DO NOT BATHE OR TOUCH EYES AFTER HANDLING
*RESEARCH ALL DRUG INTERACTIONS/DOSAGES BEFORE ADDING OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
*IF SKIN IRRITATION OCCURS WASH WITH COLD WATER AND SOAP IMMEDATLY
*IF IRRITATION WORSENS OR CONTINUES CONSULT HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL
*DO NOT CONSUME IF RUE IS ADDED // DO NOT CONSUME PERIOD.

House Wash / Bath for Cleansing and Uncrossing

- 1 gallon Hot Water
- 3 tablespoons Thieves Vinegar #1 for bath or #3for home
- Psalms 23 or any protective prayer/words you like

Method for House Wash:
1. Combine ingredients in bucket with preferred house wash or alone.
2. Read prayer/words over the mixture three times to bless it.
3. Wipe down walls, floors in a counterclockwise motion, working from the back of your space to the front.
4. Listen to music you enjoy loudly and open your windows and doors. Let in as much sunlight in as  possible at the very least. Have fun and fill the space with your own positivity and hard work.
5. Be proud and say thanks afterwards.
6. Light a preferred incense to help set the tone of your freshly cleansed space.

Method for Bath:
1.Take an intimal shower to sanitize self with normal preferred products. 2.Combine vinegar with water in bath or basin.
3.Read prayer/words over the bath three times.
4.Immerse yourself for 10 minutes at the least while thinking of all negativity leaving your life and positive, protective energy covering you and the actions you can take to help facilitate that.
4a. If in a shower pour the water starting from the top of your body working your way down, thinking about the same. See all unwanted energy flow down the drain with the water.
5. When finished, air dry and dress in clean white clothes if able to. Do this during the time of day you have the most alone time.
6. Thank any spiritual guides, God, Gods, or the universe- anyone you may have for their blessing and protection and try to conserve your energy for the rest of the day.

The Ultimate Guide to Potion Bases

We all spend so much time thinking about the correspondences of the actual ingredients that go into our potions that we often forget to think about what the potion base represents! (At least I do.) It would be nice to have a list of all the various liquids that can be used in place of water. Naturally, I can’t think of everything but I think this is a pretty good starting point! What else can be used? Eventually, at some point down the road, I will compile all these thoughts into a book on potion making and want to include this! Keep in mind that these are my own correspondences. Let me know if you disagree or if you’d change anything up! Let’s see how big we can make this list. Also, I should probably note that not all of these liquids can be ingested. (Obviously.)

The List

Vinegar: Used for cleansing and purification potions.
Lemon Juice: Used in hexing, cursing, or revenge potions.
Cranberry Juice: Used in love potions.
Apple Juice: Used in healing, knowledge, and youth potions.
Ammonia: Used in banishing, cursing, purification, and protection
Red Wine: Love potions and potions dealing with death and the afterlife.
White Wine: Used in platonic love potions as well as success brews.
Rum: Used in potions involving spirit work.
Whisky: Another good base for potion work.
Vodka: A good base for work involving rapid banishing.
Laundry detergent: Good for cleansing potions.
Oils: Used to speed up a process.
Molasses: Used in potions intended to slow a situation down.
Rubbing Alcohol: Another good base for cleansing and purification.
Hydrogen Peroxide: Used in healing potions.
Milk: Used in potions to promote sleep and peace.
Sour Milk: Used to cause nightmares or in potions designed to torment.
Orange Juice: For potions of solar importance, healing, success.
Soda Water: Used in potions designed to encourage laughter and giddiness.
Ginger Ale: Used in health or healing potions.
Olive Juice: Used in peace potions.
Honey: Used in potions to sweeten up another’s disposition.
Syrup: Used in abundance and prosperity potions.
Beer: Used in potions intended to induce slumber.
Clam Juice: Used in aphrodisiacs.
Cough Syrup: Used in healing potions and to make someone ‘cough it up.’
Soy Sauce: Used in protection potions. (Thanks Lexa Rosean for this one!)
Pineapple Juice: Used in abundance potions and fidelity potions.
Coconut Milk: Used in spiritual and magical cleansing potions.
Ice: Solid first, then melted for transformation potions.
Coffee: Really, a potion in and of itself in my book.
Vanilla Extract: In small amounts, used in passion potions.
Witch Hazel: Used in communication and cleansing potions.

What else can you all think of?

Experiment with black bean dye. The ph scale is fascinating folks!
1st pic on left is black bean dye with a drop of vinegar. Note how it is murky purple on left of bowl and pink red on right-acidity in action
Top right pic is 3 threads soaked in acidic dye and then washed in 3 different soaps to test their ph levels.
The blue thread on right side is dish soap(alkaline).
Middle thread is All dye/fragrance free -neutral?
Left side thread purple blue is ivory bit more alkaline but not bad.
Bottom pic is all 3 threads dipped in vinegar water rinse-they return a cool lavender shade. Science with yarn!

ROASTED RICE CAKES

(From M/FoMT)

https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2010/12/roasted-rice-cake-recipe.html

Ingredients:

For the roasted onions:

  • 1 teaspoon canola oil
  • 1 medium white onion, thinly sliced
  • Kosher salt

For the roasted rice cakes:

  • ¼ cup mirin
  • ¼ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 pound rice cake sticks
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 scallions, ends trimmed, green parts thinly sliced

For the Korean Red Dragon Sauce:

  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup ssamjang (fermented bean and chile sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon sherry vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil

Directions:

  1. Heat oil in 12-inch cast-ion skillet over medium-high heat until lightly smoking. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally until onions begin to brown, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and reduce heat to medium-low. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally until richly caramelized, about 30 minutes longer. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning. Transfer cooked onions to bowl.
  2. Meanwhile, make the dragon sauce. Combine water and sugar in medium saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir constantly until sugar is dissolved then remove from heat. Let cool for one minute, then stir in ssamjang until dissolved. Add soy, sherry vinegar, and sesame oil.
  3. For the rice cakes, pour mirin and broth into a large heavy-bottomed saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to medium-high and cook until lightly thickened, about two minutes. Add red dragon sauce, reduce heat to medium, and cook until glossy and thick, about six minutes. Add roasted onions and stir well.
  4. Meanwhile, clean out iron skillet, and return to stove. Add two tablespoons canola oil and heat over medium-high heat until just starting to smoke. Add rice cakes and reduce heat to medium. Cook until light brown on all sides, about 3 minutes per side.
  5. Toss rice cakes with sauce. Garnish with sesame seeds and scallions.

anarchistmemecollective:

inthefallofasparrow:

In the town where I grew up, there was a large statue in one of the parks, of a famous historical white colonizer. I’m not going to say who specifically, suffice it to say that it was someone who wasn’t worth memorializing for their deeds. And as you can imagine, this statue was a frequent target of vandalism, with paint or toilet paper or eggs on multiple occasions. Now, the local council was generally pretty lax when it came to repairing potholes or other public damage in the town, but every time, 24 hours after this particular statue was hit, the same person would always appear in a Hi-Vis vest, hat, mask and sunglasses, carrying a bucket of water, and wash it clean. They would do it as quickly as possible, but always made sure the face and the name carved at the bottom were generously scrubbed. This only encouraged people to do it again, and so it became a vicious cycle.

Within a year, the statue had sustained so much damage that it was unrecognizable and the lettering unreadable, so eventually the council came and took it down. Also apparently, the person in the Hi-Vis vest didn’t even work for the council. They were supposedly just some ‘good samaritan’ who cleaned it, often before the council even discovered it needed cleaning, so they just let them do it and ignored the problem. They didn’t bother putting the statue up again.

Much later, we found out that the anonymous 'samaritan’ had been deliberately washing the statue with a bucket of saltwater, which had dramatically corroded it, causing irreversible accumulative damage far worse than spray paint ever would have done. It’s even theorized that they were also often the one spray-painting it, just so that they had an excuse to come back after a day to wash it.
