How Covid 19 brought out my Kitchen Witchery and Healing Powers.

Me and my husband are on day 8 of isolation. The dreaded delta variant entered my home on Sept 11th 2021. It affected me like the common cold but my husband has moderate covid that can quickly turn severe. He couldn’t breathe he wouldn’t eat and he could barely stay awake for more then a few hours. His fever was 103 for 5 days and I’m happy to report today is the first day he didn’t need medication to bring down his fever. I thought I would share some of the Kitchen Witchery and Healing potions and herbs that my ancestors whispered in my ear in my moments of high desperation and anxiety.

Healing Teas

#1 Lemon and Ginger with a bit of Honey

#2 Rosehips, Elderberries, Cinnamon and Orange Peel

Mullein leaf, eucalyptus leaf, peppermint, and orange peel.

Inhalation Steam Therapies

For this you will need a pot and bring the ingredients to a boil cover the person with a towel over their head to avoid letting the steam out and let them breathe interchangeably through the mouth and nose for 10 to 15 minutes. Do this 3 times a day being careful not to burn yourself.

Non magical home remedies:

I’m not a fan of tylenol and I try to avoid it as much as possible but with covid it’s a must have to bring down fever. I used the extra strength pills.

If you don’t have an ice pack you can use a small wet towel and put it in the freezer for 1 min. Use it on forehead to bring down fever. Don’t leave the towel in the freezer for more then 1 min!!! You don’t want freezer burns.

Also jello, unflavored pediyalite, prebiotic yogurt drinks and victims D, B, and Zinc will become your best friends.

*Please note this is my experience with covid 19 and the herbal remedies that worked for me I am not claiming to be a doctor if you are experiencing emergency symptoms like shortness of breathe please seek emergency care immediately.

Rather than scooping an Avacado’s flesh out with a spoon try peeling it with a knife as close as you can, this will allow you to get as much of the good stuff as possible. The green layer just under the skin is usually discarded as it’s hard to take out with a spoon but it is full of minerals, vitamins and healthy fats.

(:

A while back a friend of mine asked me (very kindly and very clearly) to post about living on a budget - grocery shopping, eating healthy, minimize waste, etc. I still haven’t. But I’m hoping I can taylor this post later to fit his blog, because routine is such an important part of eating healthy, especially while living on a budget.

Routine doesn’t have to mean eating literally the same exact thing day after day, but being aware of what you like to eat and will eat is a good place to start for building a routine shopping list.

For example, using similar ingredients for multiple recipes throughout the week: banana oatmeal one day and peanut butter banana sandwich the next, or sweet potato fries one day and sweet potato egg scramble the next. The list literally goes on and on (as I posted a while back)

For now, it’s been best for me to stick to routine rather than seek out brand new recipes; I find it more fun and resourceful to come up with new recipes using ingredients I already have in the kitchen.

poached egg on toast literally every day of my life, unless I have oatmeal because I ran out of eggs

And coffee. I feel like this is a given with a title “ROUTINE ROUTINE” but to be extra clear, this is also part of my every day

In my fridge: eggs, Ezekiel bread, greek yogurt, hummus, carrots, kale, brussels sprouts, vanilla almond milk, marinara, peanut butter

In my pantry: granola, oats, pasta, cinnamon

On the counter: tomatoes, onion, sweet potato, bananas, apples

I can make about three different breakfasts, three different lunches, and three different dinners, knowing I will be able to use all my perishables in about a week without much going to waste. It also makes it much easier to meal plan more or less and whip up something quickly.

Vitamins

And why you should be taking them -.-

• Vitamin A : Aids in the formation and over all health of soft tissues, bones, mucous membranes, teeth and skin.

• Vitamin B6 : A.K.A pyridoxine. Lends a hand in forming red blood cells and also maintaining brain function. This vitamin is important in maintaining proteins that are part of many chemical reactions in the body. The more you eat protein, the more pyridoxine your body needs.

Vitamin B12 : Plays a big role in metabolization, while also helping form red blood cells and maintaining the central nervous system.

Vitamin C : A.K.A ascorbic acid, an antioxidant that improves the health of teeth and gums. Aids the body in absorbing iron and maintaining healthy tissue. It is essential for healing wounds.

Vitamin D : Known as the “sun vitamin,” because it is created by the body from being in the sun. For most people - You only need 10 to 15 minutes of sunlight 3x a week to produce the right amount of vitamin D. It is hard to get the right amount of vitamin D from food. Vitamin D makes it easier for the body to absorb calcium. Calcium is essential for normal development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. Also it helps in maintaining the right amount of blood levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body.

Vitamin E : An antioxidant known as tocopherol that aids the body in forming red blood cells and boosting the effects of vitamin K.

Vitamin K : Helps with bruising . Some studies found it is important for bone health.

Biotin : Assists in metabolizing proteins and carbohydrates/ the production of hormones and cholesterol.

Niacin : A B vitamin. Helps in the up keep of healthy skin and nerves. At high doses it has cholesterol-lowering effects.

Folate : Works with vitamin B12 to aid in the formation of red blood cells. Needed for the production of DNA that manages tissue growth and cell function. Pregnant women should be sure to get enough folate or it can cause birth defects like spina bifida. A lot of food is now fortified with folic acid.

Pantothenic acid : Essential for the metabolism of food. It also plays a role in making hormones and cholesterol.

Riboflavin : Vitamin B2 , teams up with the other B vitamins. Important for growing and regeneration of skin and the making of red blood cells.

Thiamine : Vitamin B1, helps cells change carbohydrates into energy. Having the right amount of carbohydrates is extremely essential while pregnant and breastfeeding, and for heart function and exquisite nerve cells.

Choline : Aids in the function of the brain and nervous system. Having a choline deficiency will cause swelling in liver.

Carnitine: helps the body to change fatty acids into energy.

Every library is closed, so are universities and you may be desperate because the library was the only place where you were able to focus.. I totally get you! But as someone who’ve spent most of its school years studying at home.. I can assure you that it’s totally fine! You just need a few techniques and organization skills and you’ll see that everything will be ok ! So here we go :

  • Clean and declutter your study space. Store the books you don’t need anymore and only keep the essentials on your desk. I’ll share with you an old article I wrote on Tumblr about how to upgrade your workspace!
  • Block distractions : give your phone to your mom, use the Forest app, the Flipd app or just put it in airplane mode !
  • Cut the outside noise : a good playlist (my Lofi playlist for example :P), earplugs and the door shut can help you be in the « library » mood…
  • Make a study plan and try to stick to a routine.. It’s easy to lose track of time when you spend all of your days at home! This is why keeping a healthy routine and set hours for meals and breaks is really important!
  • Since it’s easier to get distracted at home, make sure to take more breaks than the usual (for example a 45min study session and a 10 min break).
  • If you have online lectures and a #studybuddy that you trust, why not split the work (for example you follow half of the lectures and your colleague the other half) and then sharing your notes? Also, why not creating a Google Drive with your colleagues so everyone shares their notes? The quarantine will be long so a little support from each other is more than welcomed!!
  • You can also have skype sessions with your colleagues to debate about a subject, or quiz each other so you don’t feel too alone and you keep track of your progress :)
  • You can also take the time to go deeper into the subjects you have to study and not only scratching the surface like you may be used to do ! This is also a great way to discover if you’re more interested in some subjects than others and who knows, maybe you’ll find a new passion !
  • If you feel like you can’t focus anymore then.. stop. It’s totally fine to not being able to study all day, especially when you have nothing else to do and when the deadlines are still far and unsure. So Take this time to enjoy your family, work on yourself, read a book, or start a new hobby.

Ashwaghanda also known as Withania somnifera and also known as Indian ginseng and winter cherry, is a plant valued for centuries in India. Ashwagandha churna refers to the powdered form of ashwagandha.

Ayurvedic practitioners have long used its leaves, roots and berries to treat anemia, chronic inflammatory diseases, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, arthritis, and diabetes among other conditions. Ashwagandha is sometimes used as a poultice to relieve pain as well.

Ashwagandha possesses anti-inflammatory characteristics which may slow the progression of cartilage damage in osteoarthritis. Moreover, animal studies demonstrate that the plant may improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes.

Rare side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, skin irritation and abdominal pain. Ashwagandha seems to increase the sedative qualities of barbiturates. Speak with a physician before using ashwagandha, as it may interact with prescription or over-the-counter medicines.

Here are some of the benefits of eating Ashwagandha Churna that you must know:

Ashwagandha acts as a general body tonic; it makes you stronger and healthier. It is one of the most important ingredients of Chyawanprash (Ayurvedic preparation for immunity, health, and vitality). In addition to boosting your overall immunity, Ashwagandha also acts as an anti-cancer agent as it slows the growth of cancerous tumors.

Ashwagandha is used as an aphrodisiac as well since it supports sexual health. Ashwagandha had aphrodisiac properties and people use it as a medication to improve vitality and fertility. It also helps in increasing sperm count and also the quality of sperms.

Ashwagandha translates to “smell of a horse”, in Sanskrit. It is believed that a person who consumes Ashwagandha will gain horse-like strength and vitality. In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is referred to as Balya, which means giving strength in conditions like general debility. It is known to improve energy, increase stamina and endurance and fight fatigue. It nourishes all the body tissues, including the joints, bones, and nerves. It is also good for people who do physical labor or exercise a lot, to help the body adapt to physical stress.

Ashwagandha is perfect for those who suffer from stress and anxiety as it inhibits high levels of cortisol, ‘the stress hormone’. It helps in relieving physical and mental stress and overcome depression. Ashwagandha helps promote relaxation as it is a natural adaptogen. It nourishes the nerves and improves nerve function to help you maintain calm during stressful situations. It helps in providing nourishment to the brain for its better function and greater ability to work and is known as a mood-boosting herb.

It helps in mental and physical stress. We may say it is anti inflammatory and anti free radical. Useful in joint pains, emancipation as well as obesity. It is used in combination with other drugs as per the texts of Ayurveda ( yoga Vidhi). As for churns, I do not know which text it is following. It is being used for treating cancer in AVS Kottakkal, has been tested and found beneficial by AIIMS Delhi as well, not that treatment at AVS need any other certification.
