Celebrating Ostara

SPRING EQUINOX | March 19-22

Decorations: flowers, butterfly, eggs, baskets, four-leaf clovers

Incense: rose, sage, jasmin, lavender, lemongrass, lilac

Food: honey, banana, eggs, milk, seeds and nuts, green vegetables, quiche, lavender lemonade

The fairies are really busy at the spring equinox, looking after the flowers that are nearly blooming. Ostara is a goddess who represents dawn. Night and day are of equal length but the year is now waxing and light is about to defeat the darkness, and celebrate its own fertility.

Rituals to celebrate:

With people, gather in a circle to set intentions for togetherness, fertility and abundance.

In the kitchen, bake honey cakes and banana bread.

Get crafty, by making a bird feeder for your garden or decorating eggs to put on your altar.

Dress up, with spring colors: whites, bright, and floral patterns.

Write in your journal, about negative thoughts that you are choosing not to bring with you in the coming spring.

Meditate, about what fertility and growth means to you.

Other ideas to celebrate:

  • Plant and gather flowers.
  • Do some research on herbs and their properties.
  • Start a new project (creative, personal or professional).
  • Spend as much time in nature as possible.
  • Reconnect with animals by going to a farm or an ethical zoo.

Blessed Ostara witches!

️ Celebrating Imbolc ️

CANDLEMAS | February 1

Decorations: white flowers, candles, seeds, daffodils, broom, cross

Incense: vanilla, basil, bay leaves, hay, straw, wormwood, jasmin

Food: crêpes, poppy seeds muffins, sunflower seeds, waffles, scones, garlic, onions, chia seeds

Imbolc means “in the belly”, and it is the time when life stirs in the belly of earth. It is a feast of lightness and brightness, but also a time for cleansing, to make way for the new. It is sacred to the celtic goddess Brigid, as she is associated as a deity with spring, fertility, healing, light and poetry.

Rituals to celebrate:

With people, have a walk outside and look for signs of spring’s return.

In the kitchen, bake poppy seed muffins.

Get crafty, by weaving a Brigid’s cross.

Dress up, using white and bright outfits to celebrate the return of light.

Write in your journal, how you plan to take care of nature and the environment this year.

Meditate, about what healing means to you.

Other ideas to celebrate:

  • Start planting your garden.
  • Declutter and clean your living space to prepare for spring.
  • Light white candles to invite the sun to come back.
  • Open the windows to let fresh air in.
  • Make a cleansing spray to lift up your spirit.

Blessed Imbolc everyone!

I hope you had a great Yule and a merry Christmas!

Even though New Year’s Eve is not part of the witches’ sabbats, or the pagan’s wheel of the year, many witches still decide to celebrate December 31st. Here are a few ideas to make this night a bit more witchy and magical…

Make New Year’s resolutions, and note them in your grimoire or book of shadows. Draw magical sigils to ensure strength and success.

Use kitchen witchcraft to infuse all your ambitions and good intentions for the new year into baked goods and NYE cocktails.

Make a 12-card Tarot spread, to reveal what you should focus on every month of next year.

Cleanse your home. If you want inspiration, find here my post on cleansing using the 4 elements

Practice candle magic by lighting a white candle, which represents purity and new beginnings, at midnight and whispering your hopes for 2021 to the flame.

Write a letter to your future self, to open next New Year’s Eve, as a way to reflect on what you hope to happen within the year. You can write a physical letter or use FutureMe.org

Be loud! Make as much noise as possible, especially at midnight, to scare away bad energies for the new year.

Open windows and/or doors at midnight, to let the old energies of 2020 go, and to bring in new and positive intentions.

OSTARA✨

(CORRESPONDENCES)

MAGIC:

Ostara is the sabbat of new beginnings and life. Fertility magic (especially through the use of eggs and garden and seed blessings are commonly performed during this time)

Use this Sabbat to perform magic to break away barriers, start new projects or inventions, and breathe new life into your home and garden. This is also a great time to celebrate balance as day and night are equal on this day. Color eggs to attract different things such as love, fertility, wealth, and prosperity. Then plant them in the garden to slow these things to grow into your life.

Mabon apple twist bread

More mabon goodies!!! This is something I devised while looking at various recipes and having a apples that needed to be used up. I think it turned out fairly well.

7 apples - fertility/abundance

4 cans of pillsbury crescent rolls

1tspVanilla extract- beauty/self love

2tbs Ground nutmeg-prosperity/luck

1tbs Ground cloves-prosperity/good relationships

3tbs Cinnamon-happiness/wealth

½ Crushed Walnuts-protection/empowerment

2/3 cup butter ( used vegan butter but dairy works fine) -tenacity/nurturing

1 cup sugar (preferably brown but white works fine)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Dice apples into bite size peices

then add apples, nutmeg, sugar, cloves, butter, cinnamon, and vanilla extract into pan

Keep them on medium until apples are soft.

(My stove was right between 4-3. And

it took 5-10 minutes till they were soft)

Open up the pillyberry dough and take out a single triangle from each one

(This will be used to patch up while we’re the apples break through if your like me and over stuff them)

Take the remaining dough and roll them into four separate balls

Roll out the balls into basically dough lines

Load up each line with the soft apples

Then pull on the sides to fill and create long dough filled apple things

Repeat for each ball of dough using the dough you pulled out to patch wholes along the way

Put non stick stuff into your pan (I just brush mine with olive oil)

Twist two lines of dough into a braid like thing

And repeat with the other two

Then brush over both twists with left over goop from the apples

Sprinkle on the crushed walnuts and bake for 30-35 minutes

Samhain Witch Tips - Pumpkins

  • Carving pumpkins is definitely not just for little kids. Carve sigils, spells, significant imagery, or anything you want into your pumpkin and fill it with your intention with each cut.
  • If you’re a closeted witch, carve your witchy stuff (sigils, spells etc) into the inside of the pumpkin, and make the outside just a fun design.
  • Anoint your tea light or votive candle with herbs and oils to match your intention for the season or year. I personally like to make a couple of these and have them lit while I carve as well as use them in the pumpkin/jack-o-lantern.
  • Before setting your candle into your pumpkin, sprinkle the insides with herbs that match your intentions and maybe some that have some anti-microbial action as well to help your pumpkin last longer before rotting. Cinnamon and cloves are great for this. The warmth from your candle will release your intentions as well as a lovely scent.
  • If you want to really absorb all the lovely goodness of the work you’ve put into carving this pumpkin, buy a pie pumpkin (sometimes called sugar pumpkin) carve it the night or day before your Samhain celebration, only use safe, culinary herbs inside and keep an unscented candle lit in it (make sure you only use either a soy or beeswax candle with a cotton, unleaded wick,) and the next day you can roast it in the oven (350*F for about an hour usually does it, or until it’s soft enough to easily sink a fork into) And then share this lovely squash with your spirit friends, witchy friends, family etc at your Samhain meal.
  • Pumpkins and all other winter squash actually keep for a very long time if stored properly. So you can buy a bunch from a farmers market now while they’re in season. Give them a rinse in a diluted bleach and water solution to kill off any mold spores that might cause premature rotting. Then make them part of your Samhain decor to imbue them with your good intentions and then store them in a garage or somewhere else that stays between 50-60*F and you’ll have delicious, enchanted squash all season long! I’ve had some last for up to 4 months before.
  • Enjoy this lovely seasonal fruit and may it nourish you all season long

Additional note!!

Many sites suggest dipping your finished carved pumpkins in bleach solution to help preserve them, but if you do that, you’ll be unable to compost them or donate them to animal sanctuaries that will use them for food and enrichment. Dipping an un-carved pumpkin in v dilute bleach is fine if you’re going to store it to eat yourself, but if you’re going to donate your pumpkins, please don’t use bleach!

Green Garden Goddess Dip

for Midsummer - Litha

½ cup green onion, thinly sliced

1 T. garlic, minced

1 T. olive oil

8 oz. spinach, triple washed, patted dry, and de-stemmed

1 avocado, peeled, pitted, and diced

1 cup loose parsley, washed well

¼ cup chives, sliced

1 T. freshly chopped dill

1 T. lime juice

¼ t. salt

¼ t. hot sauce, of choice

1 - 8 oz. container plain vegan soy yogurt

In a non-stick skillet, saute the green onion and garlic in the olive oil for 2 minutes to soften. Add the spinach and continue to saute until the spinach just wilts. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside to cool completely. Transfer the spinach mixture to a food processor. Add the remaining ingredients, except the vegan yogurt, and process for 2-3 minutes or until smooth. Add the vegan yogurt and process well to combine. Taste and add additional salt, hot sauce, or lime juice, to taste. Transfer the mixture to a glass bowl, cover, and chill for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend. Serve as an appetizer with raw vegetables, bread slices, crackers, or chips, or use as a condiment on sandwiches, cooked vegetables, or grains. Yield: 2 Cups
